Mayan and Aztec populations mixed ground cacao seeds with various seasonings to make a spicy, frothy drink called chocoatl. After the European “discovery” of the Americas, Spanish conquistadors brought cocoa pods back to Spain; through subsequent centuries the drink’s popularity spread throughout Europe.
In the 19th century, it was discovered that cocoa could be mixed with milk and cocoa butter, and the first chocolate bar was born.
